Rome, for centuries the Capital City of the Roman Empire, was once one of the largest Cities in the world. Almost abandoned during the Dark Ages, when there were barely 20,000 inhabitants, buildings were left without being maintained and became run down. Earthquakes, floods and over time the ancient buildings became covered under 20 or even 30 feet of mud and rubble.
From the first millennium AD, the Renaissance, medieval and modern Rome were built over the ruins of the Roman buildings. Sometimes recycling the old structures, but mostly just building on top, ignoring what was underneath.
Today hundreds of crypts, rooms, fountains, houses, temples and tombs are still perfectly preserved underground. It is an unique treasure not open to everyone, but a visit to Rome which does not includes this sites will be like missing one of Rome most attractive aspects. Most of the sites are not open to the public if not accompanied by a Guide.
